Robert Whittaker Doesn't Think Alex Pereira's Idea To Fight In Middleweight Against Dricus du Plessis A Good One

The reigning UFC middleweight champion retained his title at UFC 305 by defeating former champ Israel Adesanya. His odd style and brilliant game plan worked against the “Laststylebender,” who was a favorite to win the fight against “Stillknocks.” In the fourth round, Dricus threw an excellent combo to stun Israel Adesanya, and then he took the fight to the ground to choke Adesanya and made him submit. The two, post-fight, bury the hatchet, and Israel declares Dricus a true African Champ. Reacting to the fight, Alex Pereira hinted at his return to the middleweight division to fight Dricus du Plessis, but Robert Whittaker doesn’t think that’s a good idea for the light heavyweight champ.

But would that be possible for “Poatan” to cut his weight to 185 lbs once more in his MMA career as the light heavyweight champion now fighting at 205 lbs? Even if he does make weight, would he be able to fight with the same destructive power he is fighting at 205lbs? Robert Whittaker, who fought DDP earlier, said it wouldn’t work for Poatan if he came down to 185 pounds as DDP rules the division with his ruthless power and odd fighting style. He acknowledged the power of Alex Pereira’s left hook, but if he comes down to make the weight, he will dampen his power, and DDP is powerful at middleweight.

“Well, Alex gets hit and Dricus likes getting hit,” Whittaker said of the clash of styles. “It’s hard to see someone with the amount of power to stop Dricus from walking forward into you and Dricus hits hard. You saw that in the fight against Adesanya. Adesanya’s got like a really good chin, and Dricus was still hurting him enough to make him uncomfortable.”
