India’s Flag Bearers, Paralympics 2024: Opening And Closing Ceremony
India’s Javelin Thrower Sumit Antil and Shot Put star Bhagyashri Jadhav were the flag bearers of India’s contingent in the opening ceremony of the Paralympics 2024. Sumit Antil defended his Gold medal and came to the top of the podium again. In the Tokyo Paralympics, Sumit Antil secured his first gold medal and set up a Paralympics record of 68.55m. This time, he surpassed his own record and set a new Paralympic Record of 70.59m. Bhagyashri Jadhav failed to get a medal this time and finished 5th in the women’s Shot put.
Sprinter Preeti Pal and Archer Harvinder Singh were the flag bearers during the closing ceremony of the event. Archer Harvinder Singh gave his best performance in the Men’s archery event and clinched Gold for his nation, becoming the first Indian athlete to win Gold in archery at the Paralympics. Sprinter Preeti Pal made history by clinching two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m sprints.
India At Paralympics 2024: Controversies
There were some controversial moments in the Paralympics 2024, but surrounding India, it was only one. The controversy worked in favor of the Indian athlete Navdeep Singh, who was representing India in the Javelin Throw at the Paralympics 2024. He secured a silver for himself in the F41 category after his best throw of 47.32m. Iran’s Beit Sayah had the best throw of the event; he had a throw of 47.64m and would have been given a gold medal if he hadn’t done what he wasn’t permitted to do. Iranian Javelin Thrower breached rule 8.1 of the World Para Athletics Rules and Regulations (Code of Conduct and Ethics) by waving an objectionable flag while celebrating, and that’s what led to his disqualification as Navdeep Singh was awarded the Gold medal.
