The US Open semi-final between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova was interrupted for 49 minutes by climate protesters, one of whom glued their feet to the floor. Four demonstrators stood in the upper tier of Arthur Ashe Stadium, chanting for an end to fossil fuels just before the second game of the second set. While three were escorted out, it took longer to remove the fourth, who had affixed their bare feet to the floor. All four were subsequently taken into custody by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) explained that the lengthy delay was due to the nature of the protest and the need for NYPD and medical personnel to safely remove the individual. The interruption occurred at 20:05 local time, with Gauff leading 6-4, 1-0.
During the delay, Muchova received medical treatment, and Gauff practiced serves. Eventually, both players left the court and headed to the locker room as security personnel and NYPD officers worked to resolve the situation.
Gauff went on to win the match 6-4, 7-5. Reflecting on the interruption, she mentioned that she had anticipated a climate change protest at the US Open and noted that similar disruptions had occurred at the French Open and Wimbledon. Crowd members voiced their frustration during the stoppage, with some directing chants of “kick them out” toward the protesters.
