World number two Carlos Alcaraz has been dealt a sad blow after picking up an injury during the Rio Open final. This unfortunate event is likely to prevent him from playing in the Acapulco tournament this week, according to one of his coaches. Alcaraz had been on track for an incredible run at the Rio Open, and while it is disappointing he cannot take part in the upcoming Acapulco tournament, there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing a lot of great tennis from him soon- hopefully injury free.
19-year-old tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz was back in full force, coming off three months of abdominal and hamstring injuries to claim victory at the Buenos Aires title. His amazing performance throughout the ATP Tour event only set the stage for an intense final match with Cameron Norrie in Rio. Unfortunately, during his semi-final Alcaraz suffered a left leg injury which seemed to have gotten worse as he went up against Briton Norrie, leaving him questionable for the rest of the season. However, regardless of this disappointing end, this 19-year-old dazzled on the court, further showing us why he is becoming one of today’s hottest tennis stars.
Coach Antonio Martinez Cascales, who has been traveling along with Alcaraz through the South American swing of tournaments, was worried when he saw the 2019 U.S. Open Champion fall during his opening round tie against Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday. While it was tough to face this reality, Cascales said that he hoped it was not a serious injury and just a simple contracture due to the change in surfaces and lack of practice before this tournament. As a coach, Cascales’ concern for Alcaraz is understandable given that the player has come so far in the last year, making international headlines with his 2019 US Open win.
When Fernando Alcaraz had to call for his leg to be wrapped while competing in the match against Norrie, his team was faced with a difficult decision. Should they throw in the towel or try and keep playing? According to Coach Cascales, they evaluated their options but in the end it was Alcaraz who wanted to carry on. He wasn’t alone either; there are many competitors out there who take a lot of determination and willpower to continue despite any physical challenges they may be dealing with. It speaks volumes about their commitment as athletes and professionals.
