In a recent revelation, former British-Canadian tennis player Greg Rusedski shared insights into the intriguing dynamics of the ATP circuit. Despite Carlos Alcaraz briefly holding the prestigious World No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings, Rusedski disclosed that many players on the tour still consider Novak Djokovic as the best player.
The battle for the World No. 1 ranking has been a fascinating story in men’s tennis throughout this year. Carlos Alcaraz, the talented young Spaniard, enjoyed a 20-week stint at the top of the ATP rankings. However, Djokovic, the seasoned Serbian maestro, has been closing in, currently holding the World No. 1 position for the 18th week in 2023.
During a recent discussion on the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast, Rusedski lauded Alcaraz’s performance at the US Open. Despite not being able to defend his title, Rusedski emphasized that Alcaraz’s display was far from disappointing.
However, Rusedski also revealed that a significant portion of the tennis community doesn’t consider Alcaraz the best player. This perception stems from Djokovic’s absence in several crucial tournaments, particularly in the United States, due to visa restrictions.
The rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz has been a highlight of the tennis season. Their head-to-head record stands at 2-2, with three of these encounters taking place this year. Alcaraz notably secured his first victory against Djokovic in 2022 at the Madrid Open, where he eventually clinched the title.
In July of this year, Alcaraz triumphed over Djokovic at Wimbledon, delivering a stunning comeback to prevent Djokovic from claiming an eighth Major title on grass. Djokovic, on the other hand, emerged victorious in their meetings at the French Open and the Cincinnati Masters. This ongoing rivalry promises more thrilling clashes in the world of tennis.
