Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his battle with mental health following a devastating loss at Wimbledon several years ago. In an upcoming documentary, Kyrgios discussed the difficult decision to check into a psychiatric hospital for treatment.
Kyrgios lost to 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal in the second round of the tournament in London. Afterward, Kyrgios said in an upcoming episode of Netflix’s “Break Point” that he felt overwhelmed with emotions and was struggling to cope with the loss.
“I was so down after Wimbledon,” Kyrgios said. “I just remember thinking I’m done, like this is it for me.” He added that after his loss he was dealing with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
Kyrgios said that eventually he made the decision to seek professional help for his mental health struggles. He checked into a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles to receive treatment.
“It was like an awakening,” Kyrgios said of his experience at the hospital. “I felt so much better after I left. I felt so much more aware of myself and what was going on inside my head.” He added that the experience helped him to recognize his mental health issues and gave him the tools he needed to cope with them.
Kyrgios said he hopes that by opening up about his struggles, it will help others who may be dealing with similar issues. “I think it’s important for people to know that it’s okay to talk about mental health,” he said.
Kyrgios’ upcoming documentary is expected to shed light on the issue of mental health in professional sports and will help to raise awareness about the importance of seeking help and taking care of one’s wellbeing.
