Djokovic, fresh off his remarkable victory at the US Open, securing his 24th grand slam title, had recently been representing the Serbian team at the Davis Cup, assisting them in securing a spot in the finals set for November.

Djokovic took to social media on a Sunday to break the news of his withdrawal from the ATP 1000 event scheduled to commence on October 2nd. His decision opens the door for the talented Spanish player, Carlos Alcaraz, to potentially ascend to the coveted World No.1 ranking. In addition to the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic had previously announced his absence from this year’s Laver Cup, which is slated to take place from September 22nd to 24th. He also won’t be defending his title at the Astana Open in Kazakhstan, beginning on September 27th.

In explaining his decision, Djokovic expressed his fondness for the Shanghai Masters, a tournament he has consistently cherished over the years, acknowledging the tremendous support he has received from Chinese fans. He tweeted, “Over the years, some of the best support I receive anywhere in the world is in China. Shanghai has always been one of my favorite tournaments in the season. I will be missing my Nole Fam in China. I hope that I can come back to China in the future and play in front of all of you again.”
