Emerging British tennis sensation, Emma Raducanu, made her major breakthrough at the age of just 18 years and 10 months when she clinched the 2021 US Open championship, skyrocketing to global fame and securing her place as one of the brightest talents on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) circuit. With this victory, Raducanu shattered several records, including becoming the youngest major winner since Maria Sharapova’s Wimbledon victory in 2004, and the first British female player to conquer a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade in 1977.
Nonetheless, the path following her rapid ascent was far from smooth. The pressure that comes with such a swift rise to prominence, coupled with disappointing performances and recurring injuries, led Raducanu to undergo surgeries on both her hands and her left ankle. These setbacks temporarily stalled the promising career trajectory of the British player, resulting in her slipping to the 136th position in the WTA rankings.
Recently, however, signs of a much-anticipated comeback have emerged. Through a post on Instagram, Raducanu hinted at her imminent return to the WTA tour. The shared video showcased the tennis star involved in various training activities, including squats and other exercises, and using red light therapy, a popular method of aiding muscle recovery and reducing inflammation. Her caption, “Hi! First few steps but nice to be reintroduced!”, hinted at her progress towards full recovery and readiness to return to the court.
Now, as the US Open 2023 looms closer, the focus is not merely on Raducanu‘s ability to grace the catwalk, but also on her ambitions for the tournament. The most significant question on everyone’s minds is how she will cope with the demands of the competition, especially with her wrists having undergone three surgeries. If all goes well, it is hoped that this tournament will mark the starting point of a fresh phase in Raducanu’s career.
