The Pakistan Football Federation’s (PFF) Normalisation Committee is set to release coach Stephen Constantine, despite the national team’s historic victory over Cambodia in the FIFA World Cup Qualifying, securing their place in the second round.
Constantine, known for his previous coaching stints with the Indian men’s team, was brought in on a short-term basis specifically for the matches against Cambodia. Under his guidance, Pakistan achieved a goalless draw in the away leg and secured a 1-0 win in the home game, ending a 13-match losing streak and progressing to the next round of the World Cup Qualifiers.
While Constantine’s performance was commendable, the decision to release him is based on the short-term nature of his contract. A senior official from the PFF’s Normalisation Committee stated that they intend to rehire Constantine, but it will depend on his availability and financial terms. Constantine will be returning home soon, and discussions regarding his future involvement with the Pakistan national team will follow.
The official emphasized the desire to bring Constantine back, especially considering the possibility of Pakistan advancing to the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers. Such an achievement would also grant Pakistan eligibility to participate in the 2027 Asian Cup, a significant milestone for Pakistani football.
However, the logistics and financial aspects remain primary concerns for the committee in approaching Constantine. The decision to part ways is rooted in the short-term contract’s initial purpose, and any future collaboration will require negotiations and an agreement that suits both parties.
Constantine’s brief tenure had an immediate impact on the Pakistani team, breaking their losing streak and boosting their confidence on the international stage. Before his arrival, Pakistan struggled to score goals, with just one goal in their last eight matches and 18 goals conceded.
As Pakistan celebrates its historic victory and entry into the World Cup Qualifiers’ next round, the football community awaits news on whether Constantine will return to lead the team further into the competition.
