Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen is reportedly looking at the possibility of joining Manchester City as he seeks more regular playing time. The 21-year-old Dutch talent has found opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge and is eager to secure a first-team role elsewhere.
While Maatsen has shown promise and versatility, making appearances as a left-back, winger, and playmaker during pre-season, his game time during the current campaign has been sparse. He’s made just two starts in nine total appearances this season, leaving him eager for more consistent action.
Although Chelsea recently extended Maatsen’s contract until June 2025, activating a 12-month extension clause in his current deal, the young player appears inclined to consider other options if it means more opportunities to showcase his skills.
Maatsen had a productive loan spell at Burnley last season, contributing four goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, helping the club secure promotion back to the Premier League. Burnley was interested in making his move permanent during the last transfer window, but Maatsen chose to remain at Chelsea, hoping to compete for a place in the squad.
However, his playing time has been limited by the resurgence of Marc Cucurella at left-back and the excellent form of players like Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer in more advanced roles.
While Chelsea still plans to offer Maatsen a long-term contract, the prospect of securing a spot in City’s squad and competing for regular first-team action may be an attractive proposition for the young Dutchman.
As Maatsen keeps his options open, it remains to be seen if Manchester City will make a move for the talented Chelsea ace in the upcoming transfer windows, but it’s clear that the player is eager for more consistent opportunities on the pitch.
