New Zealand Cricketers Express Interest in Kabaddi During ICC World Cup 2023 in India

New Zealand cricketers express interest in kabaddi during their time in India for the ICC World Cup 2023.

New Zealand cricketers Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, and Tom Latham have shown a keen interest in the sport of kabaddi during their time in India for the ICC World Cup 2023. While watching highlights from the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), the trio shared their thoughts on this unique and physically demanding game.

Tom Latham, the wicketkeeper-batter, likened kabaddi to rugby, noting that it involves players teaming up to prevent one player from crossing a line. Latham even humorously nominated his teammate Glenn Phillips, describing him as a “powerful pocket rocket” suitable for the sport.

Trent Boult, known for his pace in cricket, endorsed his fellow teammates, Daryl Mitchell and Tim Southee, as potential kabaddi players. He highlighted the importance of strong legs in kabaddi and suggested that Mitchell and Southee would excel in the game.

Mitchell Santner, an all-rounder, also expressed his interest in kabaddi and suggested that Glenn Phillips would be a suitable candidate for the sport. He acknowledged that while he might have the agility required for kabaddi, he lacks the necessary strength. Santner also mentioned Lockie Ferguson as a player who could perform well in kabaddi due to his strong core and legs.

The Pro Kabaddi League’s upcoming tenth season is scheduled to commence on December 2, 2023, in Ahmedabad, offering a great opportunity for these cricketers to explore the sport further.

In cricket news, India’s victory over New Zealand in the ICC World Cup 2023 semifinal was highlighted. Virat Kohli‘s record 50th ODI hundred and a stunning century by Shreyas Iyer propelled India to a formidable total of 397 for four. Mohammed Shami’s remarkable figures of 7/57 played a crucial role in restricting New Zealand to 327. Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell’s 181-run partnership was a standout moment in New Zealand’s innings.

While the cricketers continue to shine on the cricket field, their interest in kabaddi adds a unique dimension to their sportsmanship and showcases the universal appeal of different sports.
