Former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie, in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, suggests that Rangers may part ways with the underperforming forward, Sam Lammers.
The Glasgow-based club has officially confirmed that the 26-year-old striker will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Eredivisie club Utrecht after a lackluster first six months at Ibrox. Lammers, a £3.5 million signing, faced criticism from the Ibrox faithful for managing only two goals and two assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.
McAvennie expressed his belief that Lammers struggled to cope with the pressure at Rangers and that the fans’ discontent played a significant role in the decision to send him on loan. The former Celtic striker asserted, “Lammers has had enough chances at Rangers. The fans didn’t take to him, and that’s huge. Now he’s gone to Utrecht where no one is bothered if you win or lose over there. That was his biggest problem.”
According to McAvennie, the expectations at Rangers, where fans demand 100% effort in every minute of play, were too much for Lammers to handle. The striker’s inability to meet these demands led to the decision to loan him out to Utrecht.
While on loan in the Eredivisie, Lammers will have the opportunity to revive his form in an environment that may offer him more breathing space and less pressure compared to the demanding atmosphere at Ibrox. McAvennie concluded, “It’s a strange one, but I don’t think he will be back at Ibrox.”
As speculation continues regarding Lammers’ future at Rangers, the loan move to Utrecht appears to be a strategic decision aimed at providing the striker with a fresh start and the chance to regain his confidence on the field.
