UFC featherweight champ Ilia Topuria shocked the MMA world with his back-to-back impressive performances, and people are loving him for backing all of his trash talks. Some, in fact, compared him with young Conor McGregor when the Irish MMA fighter was making headlines for his brash attitude and backing his talks every time he entered the Octagon. The Spaniard was named Conor McGregor 2.0, but he is an evolved version of the Irish fighter. Surprisingly, UFC introduced “El Matador” as more of a grappler than a striker, whereas “The Notorious” was a striker and had the one-punch knockout power, but as Ilia’s career progresses, he has proved that he has bombs in his hands as former champions were dropped unconscious by El Matador.
Ilia Topuria’s last fight against former featherweight champ and reigning BMF champ Max Holloway established him as a knockout artist. He did what he said he would do in the Octagon and became the first fighter to knock out Max Holloway. Moreover, his featherweight championship fight was a glimpse of what he could do to his opponents. At UFC 298, he knocked out former champ Alexander Volkanovski to get the gold and then shut the doubters with his victory over Max Holloway. With the talks for a rematch between Topuria and Volkanovski, the Spaniard is looking to stretch his hands toward other divisions and call out champs of different weight classes.
Ilia’s eyes are on the lightweight division, and he calls out Islam Makhachev multiple times. In fact, he had a heated back-and-forth with Islam’s teammate and Bellator lightweight champ Usman Nurmagomedov. Though it will be an exciting matchup between two champs, UFC is not planning to get it done soon despite Ilia’s intentions to move up in the weight class. Most likely, Ilia will defend his title one more time against Alexander Volkanovski, who is planning to return to the Octagon next year.
