India’s wicket-keeper batter, KL Rahul, after serving Lucknow Super Giants in his previous three seasons as a captain, has found a new home as the right-handed batter would play in the IPL 2025 wearing Delhi Capitals jersey. KL Rahul was bought in the mega auction for Rs 14 crore in December 2024, and according to some credible sources, he was offered to captain the franchise, but he denied it as he wanted to keep his focus on improving his skills as a batter.

After getting “No” from KL Rahul, Delhi Capitals approached another known name with the same offer, and most likely, the player would be seen leading the team in the coming tournament. The player who would be seen captaining Delhi Capitals’ is Axar Patel, who was part of India’s winning squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025. The all-rounder has played a significant role in both tournaments as a player, which must be the reason behind the franchise’s decision to see him as a team captain.

Axar Patel is likely to be named as Delhi Capitals skipper for IPL 2025. The franchise had asked KL Rahul to lead the team, but he wishes to contribute as a player in the upcoming tournament.”

Sources told IANS

Axar Patel has captained Delhi Capitals only once, and if the news proves to be true, this would be his first season as a captain for the franchise he has been part of since 2019. The left-arm player has played several memorable innings with the bat and contributed to the bowling department, picking up wickets whenever his team required it. So far, in his 150 games in the IPL, he has picked 123 wickets, and it would be a test for the all-rounder to prove himself as a captain in the coming IPL 2025.
