Former UFC Featherweight champ Ilia Topuria is scheduled to face former lightweight champ Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in a lightweight title bout. The decision to vacate the featherweight belt to move up to 155lbs was surprising for many, but it was a calculated move by the Spaniard as he recently revealed what he had to go through to make 145lbs. Prior to his much-awaited lightweight title bout against Charles Oliveira, “La Leyenda,” in a recent interview with ESPN, opened up on his grueling weight cut and said this.
“When you’re cutting weight and you can’t eat or drink water, you don’t care about any material things. They can give you bags of money, they can give you all the cars want, you don’t care at all. If they gave you this little glass of water and said, ‘You can drink this and it won’t increase your weight,’ I’ll give you whatever it takes, because in that moment, I’m so low. I feel terrible. It’s like sitting naked in the middle of the street.”

After getting two consecutive knockout wins over the greatest fighters in the UFC, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, Ilia Topuria felt the power of his hands in the featherweight division. Now, the Spaniard has promised a knockout victory over Charles at UFC 317, but the former champ wants Ilia to respect the lightweights, as he is being disrespectful.
“He’s saying a lot of crap. I really respect his fights, the way he’s come up and everything, but he’s being very disrespectful now and is saying a lot of things he shouldn’t.”
Oliveira said
If Ilia Topuria wins at UFC 317, he will justify his nickname, “La Leyenda,” which translates to “The Legend.” The two-division champ will next try to get a super fight against Islam Makhachev.
