From Playing Fields to High Fashion: Indian Cricket Welcomes Adidas as New Apparel Sponsor

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to make a big move with renowned sporting goods giant Adidas, as per a News18 report. If it all goes as planned, Adidas will be the official sponsor of the India Cricket Team jerseys by June 1st. This means that the players led by Rohit Sharma will be donning the Adidas jersey for their upcoming World Test Championship Final that begins on June 7th at Kennington Oval, London France. The current jersey rights were held by Killer Jeans, but BCCI is looking to bring on board an established sports brand that suits the national team better. It looks like Adidas is likely to fit the bill!

There was no lack of shock when Mobile Premier League (MPL) announced it would step down from its impressive Rs 370 Crore deal to be the official kit sponsors of India’s cricket team in mid-2021. MPL had inked a deal that was supposed to run until 2023, but to the surprise of everyone, handed over their rights to Killer Jeans shortly after. Thanks to this unexpected twist, Nike became the latest major sports brand to don the position of India’s jersey sponsor, serving in the role since 2016 until 2020. Now with Killer Jeans having come on board during the Bangladesh series, we’re left wondering – who will fill the void next?

The Indian Cricket team’s uniforms have been a major topic of discussion lately. Despite Killer Jeans’ best efforts to provide the team with suitable attire, it’s clear that this new brand does not match up to the big names in sporting goods, as most of the players are sponsored by Nike, Adidas or Puma. It is no surprise then that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is now gearing up to sign a major brand. This step would likely be welcomed by fans and critics alike, as many would like to see an established name taking the reins of cricket fashion in India.

Adidas has a long and illustrious history when it comes to cricket sponsorship. From the Mumbai Indians team to the England Cricket Team, Adidas has sponsored some of the largest teams. Now, Adidas is continuing its involvement with cricket by sponsoring captains Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant from India’s national cricket team. While they moved away from sponsoring England Cricket Team, they are now reentering the market with an even greater presence in India. Currently, Adidas sponsors Nottinghamshire, South East Stars and Surrey in addition to the current Indian national team players. This shows their commitment to the sport at a global level and reaffirms their standing as one of the premier sports goods manufacturers in the world.
