In a significant move to enhance the prowess of Indian badminton, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) has appointed Indonesian coach Mulyo Handoyo as the singles head coach at the newly-established National Center of Excellence (NCoE) in Guwahati. This move is part of BAI’s broader strategy to bring in foreign expertise to foster the development of homegrown talent.
Joining the ranks of foreign coaches at the NCoE are former Russian All England champion Ivan Sozonov, who will serve as the doubles coach, and Korean mentor Park Tae-sang, renowned for guiding PV Sindhu to a bronze medal triumph at the Tokyo Olympics. The NCoE, a collaborative effort between the Assam Government and BAI, is set to be inaugurated in Guwahati and boasts an impressive infrastructure, featuring 24 world-class badminton courts, hostel facilities, a gym, a yoga center, and a seating capacity of around 3000 spectators.
BAI’s move to engage these top foreign coaches is indicative of its long-term vision to bolster Indian badminton’s standing on the global stage. Sanjay Mishra, the general secretary of BAI, underscored the significance of this initiative and its alignment with the association’s broader plans for the sport’s growth.
The presence of eminent foreign coaches at the NCoE is poised to create a transformative impact on Indian badminton. With their expertise and experience, the center can serve as a hub for hosting junior and senior training camps, harnessing the potential of budding talents across the nation. The addition of Mulyo Handoyo, famed for his coaching contributions to the 2004 Athens Olympic gold medalist Taufik Hidayat, is especially noteworthy, considering his prior successful tenure with the Indian national team.
As BAI takes this pivotal step forward, it signals a promising era for Indian badminton, emphasizing the association’s dedication to nurturing and honing the skills of future champions through strategic collaborations with esteemed foreign coaches.
