In a historic moment for Indian badminton, the men’s doubles duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have secured the top spot in the latest BWF World Rankings. This achievement makes them the first Indian doubles pair in history to reach the pinnacle of the Badminton World Federation World Rankings.
Commonly referred to as “Sat-Chi,” Satwik and Chirag’s remarkable ascent in the rankings comes on the back of their stellar performances in the recent Asian Games badminton men’s doubles event held in Hangzhou, where they clinched a historic gold medal. In a thrilling final, the Indian pair defeated Kim Wonho and Choi Solgyu from the Republic of Korea with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-16.
The duo’s success in the Asian Games is just one part of their incredible journey in 2023. They began the year by winning their first title at the 2023 Swiss Open in March, setting the stage for their spectacular run. In April, they claimed the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Dubai, showcasing their dominance in the sport.
Their breakthrough moment arrived in June when they secured their first BWF World Super 1000 title at the 2023 Indonesia Open. Notably, they became the first men’s doubles team from India to achieve this feat by defeating the 2022 world champions, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia, in the final.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy continued their winning streak by clinching victories at the 2023 Korean Open and, most notably, the Asian Games 2023, cementing their status as the world’s best men’s doubles pair.
While the spotlight shines on Satwik and Chirag, India’s other badminton stars are also making strides in the rankings. PV Sindhu, despite missing out on a medal at the Asian Games 2023, has climbed two positions and is now ranked 13th in women’s singles. Saina Nehwal, the London 2012 Olympics bronze medallist, maintains her world No. 54 ranking.
In the men’s singles category, HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen each dropped one position and are ranked 8th and 15th, respectively. Kidambi Srikanth, on the other hand, has risen one spot and now holds the 20th position.
In women’s doubles, India’s top-ranked pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly have climbed one position to secure the 16th rank. In mixed doubles, the duo of Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy retained their world No. 38 rank and continue to be India’s top pair in the category.
The achievements of these Indian badminton stars signify a golden era for the sport in the country, with Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy leading the way as the world’s new No. 1 men’s doubles pair.
