In a resounding victory, the Indian women’s badminton team clinched a 3-0 win over Mongolia in the round of 16 at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Led by two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, the Indian squad demonstrated their dominance, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
PV Sindhu set the tone for India by starting the tie with a commanding performance against Ganbaatar Myagmartseren. She won the match with an incredible score of 21-2, 21-3 in just 20 minutes, giving India an early 1-0 lead.
Following Sindhu’s victory, Ashmita Chaliha, aged 23, continued India’s winning streak by defeating Kherlen Darkhanbaatar with a score of 21-2, 21-3, extending India’s lead to 2-0.
The third singles match featured Anupama Upadhyaya, who maintained India’s dominance by securing a decisive 21-0, 21-2 victory over Khulangooto Baatar, sealing the tie at 3-0 in India’s favor.
With this convincing win, the Indian women’s badminton team advances to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face Thailand on the following day.
Meanwhile, the Indian men’s badminton team, including HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and Lakshya Sen, is slated to compete on the upcoming day after receiving a first-round bye. They will face the winner between Nepal and Mongolia in the quarter-finals, with the potential to secure a medal by reaching the semi-finals.
The team events in badminton at the Asian Games will continue until October 1, with the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events commencing on October 2. Indian badminton players are determined to capture their first Asian Games gold medal at Hangzhou 2023, aiming to surpass their previous best performance at Jakarta 2018, where they secured one silver and one bronze medal.
