Kiran George, the Indian badminton sensation, secured the men’s singles championship at the Indonesia Masters 2023, held in Medan, North Sumatra. In a thrilling showdown at the GOR PBSI Pancing court, the 50th-ranked Kiran George faced off against Japan’s world No. 82, Koo Takahashi, and emerged victorious with a scoreline of 21-19, 22-20. This victory marked George’s second BWF World Tour Super 100 badminton title, following his win at the Odisha Open last year.
In a closely contested first game, both Kiran George and Koo Takahashi matched each other’s intensity. However, George surged ahead after the scores were tied at 15-all, ultimately taking the first game. The second game followed a similar pattern, with the 23-year-old Indian shuttler elevating his game to secure a five-point lead at 16-11. Although Koo Takahashi mounted a strong comeback towards the end of the game, George held his ground to force a tie-breaker, clinching his first BWF World Tour Super 100 title of the 2023 badminton season.
Kiran George’s path to the title included a notable victory over 2014 World Championships bronze medalist Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in the semi-finals.
While Kiran George shone as the sole Indian finalist at the Indonesia Masters 2023, other Indian shuttlers faced mixed results. The Indian women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa reached the semi-finals but was ousted by a top-seeded Indonesian pair. In women’s singles, Mansi Singh reached the quarter-finals but was eliminated by Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei. Commonwealth Games gold medalist Parupalli Kashyap and Subhankar Dey could not advance past the qualifying rounds.
Looking ahead, Indian shuttlers are set to compete in the Hong Kong Open, a BWF Super 500 event, and the Vietnam Open Super 100 tournament, with both events commencing on Tuesday.
