In the 2023 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso boldly moved from Alpine to Aston Martin. This decision paid off with a competitive car and six podium finishes in the first eight races. Despite finishing fourth in the drivers’ championship, tied with Charles Leclerc, Alonso believes Aston Martin deserved a win more than any other team, citing their remarkable progress from the previous year.
Fernando Alonso’s switch to Aston Martin proved fruitful, as the team showcased significant improvement compared to the 2022 season. The Spanish driver praised the team’s performance, emphasizing their deserved recognition after securing eight podiums throughout the season. The team’s closest opportunity for victory came in Monaco, where only a stellar final sector from Max Verstappen denied Alonso a pole position and a chance to convert it into a win on the challenging street circuit.
Reflecting on the season, Alonso identified key moments where victory slipped away. Monaco stood out as the closest call, with a disputed pit strategy during changing weather conditions hindering their chances. The veteran driver also pointed to the race in Zandvoort, suggesting that a different position during a restart could have altered the outcome. Despite these missed opportunities, Alonso remains adamant that Aston Martin deserved the top spot on the podium.
While McLaren emerged as a surprise package in the latter part of the season, Alonso remains optimistic about Aston Martin’s overall performance in 2023. Acknowledging the struggles towards the end of the year, he sees them as a natural part of the team’s development journey. The team initially exceeded expectations and faced challenges when competing against traditional powerhouses like Mercedes and Ferrari. Alonso believes that, despite the setbacks, the season was a tremendous success, considering the team’s position just 12 months prior.
