Former CSK player Ambati Rayudu recently shared his honest thoughts on MS Dhoni’s role as a CSK face and how the former India captain and wicket-keeper batter’s obsession among his fans is both good and bad for the franchise.

No doubt, MS Dhoni brings a lot of fans to the arena. Cricket fans pour in huge numbers to watch MS Dhoni on the ground as IPL is the only league where they could see their favorite batter play since his retirement from international cricket. The obsession to see MS Dhoni on the crease is such that even in the venue outside the CSK’s home ground, fans from around India come in huge numbers that the home team feels that they are playing at CSK’s venue. There is all “Yellow” in the crowd.

Though the MS Dhoni factor has helped build loyal CSK fans, it also shows that Dhoni’s branding has created an unnecessary obsession, which will be difficult to reverse as people are supporting MS Dhoni, not the CSK team addressing the same he said this.

“It is quite strange, and I don’t think it actually serves the game well. It is quite daunting if you’re a newcomer. It’s quite loud. The support is phenomenal. But, as you go on and play, then you realise they are MS Dhoni fans before they are CSK fans. It is quite evident, and rightly so, because that’s the way the team has been set up and built over the years,”

Ambati Rayudu told ESPNCricinfo

Ambati Rayudu explained how important MS Dhoni is for CSK now and what would happen if he left the franchise and no one was ever pushed like him to be his successor.

It will be quite challenging. Not only for the players or Chennai, but definitely for the franchise itself, because for them to [attract] crowds like that, especially even on weekdays – the stands are full, the engagement is amazing; there is no cricketer close to him, to be honest. They have not built up any other guy in the franchise to pull the crowds, because it has always revolved around MS Dhoni. That might come back to maybe bite them in terms of branding or getting the crowds in. So they will have to really think out of the box to make something happen,”
