India vs UAE: India(W) defeated UAE(W) in the match number fifth of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 to bolster their chances of a semi-finals seat in the tournament.
UAE’s captain, Esha Oza, decided to bowl first after winning the toss. India’s Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana started the innings for India. Both batters were playing an aggressive game and scored 23 runs in 2 overs, but UAE made a comeback by picking up the wicket of Smriti Mandhana. Then they sent back Shafali Verma on 37 runs, followed by the wicket of Hemalatha on 2 runs. India lost three wickets inside the Powerplay. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur held her nerves and batted cautiously. She and Jemimah Rodrigues had a brief partnership, but the latter’s innings lasted only 14 runs. After the fourth wicket, Richa Ghosh and Harmanpreet Kaur launched an attack on UAE’s bowlers, and there was no one to stop Richa Ghosh. Both batters scored their fifties as India reached their highest total in T20Is. India scored 201 runs in 20 overs.
Chasing the mammoth target of 202 runs, UAE’s start wasn’t ideal as they lost Theertha Satish early in the powerplay. Indian bowlers weren’t giving much room to the UAE’s batters, and the constant pressure made them make mistakes as they started losing wickets, and the required run rate was going higher with each over. Skipper Esha Oza was scoring runs from one end, but there was no one to support her from the other. However, Kavisha Egodage scored 40 runs, which wasn’t enough to take her to a win as UAE finished their innings on 123/7 at the end of 20 overs, losing the match by 78 runs.

I am absolutely fine. It was a great feeling especially when Jemi [Rodrigues] and I were batting. We were looking to run hard rather than playing risky shots. When Richa came I told her to keep watching the ball and she batted beautifully. [Her knock] My role was to stay on the pitch and keep rotating the strike. We had a good partnership especially with Richa. Credit goes to her. [On her memories of 175 against Australia] That was a special innings for me. Was a great memory. Really happy that innings came from me. It always gave me positive vibes. [Playing fearlessly] Today also we lost early wickets but we kept ourselves ready.

It was a great experience. Lots of learnings. How to build an innings, that is something we saw first hand, and how to finish games. This is what we need to work on. We were never satisfied when playing such a big team. We need to make sure we need to take 10 wickets and not three. [Next game] We put up a better score against a better side. We have one more game, and want to take the learnings to that game.
