Once called “The Knockout Tournament,” ICC’s Champions Trophy is among the most popular ICC tournaments. Since its inaugural year, it has been a dream tournament of many cricket-playing nations. Only the top teams can play in this tournament(The top 8 teams in the preceding ODI World Cup), and one will eventually lift the trophy. So far, seven nations have won the title since 1998, with South Africa being the first to win it and India being the latest winners of the recently ended Champions Trophy 2025.
After the 2017 edition of the tournament, the ICC decided to discontinue it, as other big tournaments like the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup happen every four years and two years, respectively. So, the apex body decided to discontinue it, but seeing that the years gap between tournaments is too great and fans need to see some action in world cricket, the members of the ICC decided to revive it.
