T20 World Cup 2013 champions Sri Lanka are all set to fight for the World title again in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the Sri Lankan team this time, whereas batting all-rounder Charith Asalanka has been announced as vice-captain of the team. The ODI captain, Kusal Mendis, and test captain, Dhananjaya De Silva, are also in the squad. After including the veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews in the ODI World Cup 2023, he is again named in the 15-man squad for the marquee tournament. Bowlers like Matheesha Pathirana, who has worked hard on his slingy arm, are returned to the team and fit to play.
Sri Lanka is in Group D of the tournament alongside South Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Netherlands, and they will play their first match against South Africa on 3rd June 2024. Then, they will face their new rivals, Bangladesh, on 7th June 2024. The two teams’ rivalry started a few years ago and intensified after the World Cup 2023 incident. ICC has played the card to put these two teams in the same group to get more attention, and it will be exciting to see who will come out as the winner of the match.
