England, after finishing Day 2 with 77/3, lost the number 1 test batter, Joe Root, early on Day 3. Mohammed Siraj picked up the wicket of Joe Root, and then in the next delivery, he sent England’s skipper Ben Stokes back to the dug-out on a duck to boost the morale of his team. Indian bowlers dominated the game, but then England’s wicket-keeper batter, Jamie Smith, showed an aggressive intent to score runs. He built the partnership for the sixth wicket with Harry Brook as the two started closing the trail gap.

Jamie Smith scored his century in just 80 deliveries, and his teammate Harry Brook, who missed a hundred by just one run in the first test, calmed his nerves this time to score his 9th century in test cricket. At the end of the 2nd session of Day 3, England were on 355/5. Both batters put up a 300+ run partnership for the 6th wicket. It was Akashdeep’s delivery that found its way to the stumps as Harry Brook got out after scoring 158 runs, and then Indian pacers made a comeback to bowl out England for 407 runs. Mohammed Siraj picked up six wickets, whereas Akashdeep scalped four wickets.

India got a lead of 180 runs from the first innings, and Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opened for India in the final hours of Day 3 for the second innings. Both had a 51-run partnership, but a delivery from Josh Tongue hit the pads of Yashasvi Jaiswal as he got out after scoring 28 runs. Kaun Nair came to the crease and safely ended Day 3 of the test match with a comfortable lead of 244 runs.

India’s top order batters need to bat well on Day 4 to increase the lead further, and once they achieve a significant lead, Shubman Gill and Co. can dismiss the second innings to offer England a chance to chase the total.
