India on Day 4 got a decent start as KL Rahul and Karun Nair took the score to 96 runs, but England’s bowler Brydon Carse, who was creating chances for his team from the start of the day, got the wicket of Karun Nair as the batter got out for 26 runs. Then came Shubman Gill, and the two batters began to increase the lead. KL Rahul scored his fifty, and India was doing well on the crease until Josh Tongue’s outswing delivery, which found its way to the stumps by breaking the defense of KL Rahul. India were 3 down for 126.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease and started playing his natural aggressive game, though he gave a chance to the English side, but Zak Crawley dropped him while he scored just 10 runs. The dropped catch hurt England as Rishabh Pant scored his fifty; meanwhile, skipper Shubman Gill scored his fifty, and the two had a partnership of over 100 runs for the 4th wicket. Rishabh Pant scored 65 runs before getting out. Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill took the innings forward, and the skipper once again led from the front, scoring another century, surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to become the highest run scorer in a test match for India.
Shubman Gill got out after scoring 161 runs, with a combined total of 430 runs in two innings. He became the first batter in 148 years of test cricket to score a double hundred in the first innings and a score of 150+ in the second innings. Ravindra Jadeja scored his fifty as India took a lead of 607 runs before dismissing the innings.
England, to chase down the target of 608 runs, opened with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Mohammed Siraj who took 6 wickets in the first innings for India was hit for two consecutive boundaries by Ben Duckett but the bowler made a comeback by getting the wicket of Zak Crawley and then Akashdeep found his way to bowled Ben Duckett and Joe Root as England at the end of Day 4 were three down for 72 runs.
