India vs. New Zealand: Varun Chakravarthy’s fifer helped India defeat New Zealand by 44 runs in the 12th match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
After winning the toss, New Zealand decided to bowl first, and India started its innings with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The skipper showed his intentions by hitting a boundary and a six in the first three overs of the match. Matt Henry made a comeback by picking up the wicket of Shubman Gill as India lost its first wicket on 15 runs. Soon, the skipper got out, and then Virat Kohli, who was off to a good start, was caught at point by Glenn Phillips. India was 30/3.
Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel handled the situation and started building the partnership for the fourth wicket. Both batters played the conditions well. Shreyas Iyer scored his fifty, but Axar Patel got out after scoring 42 runs for his team. New Zealand’s brilliant fielding helped them dismiss two more batters. India was restricted to 249 runs at the end of 50 overs.
New Zealand’s openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra started the chase, but in the 4th over, a surprising bouncer by Hardik Pandya caught Ravindra off-guard as the batter was caught at third-man by Axar Patel. Kane Williamson and Will Young took the innings forward, but Varun Chakravarthy broke Will Young’s defense and dismissed him on 22 runs in the 12th over. Kane Williamson kept the scoreboard running as other batters struggled facing the spinners.
Soon, India was leading the game, but Kane Williamson was showing resistance from New Zealand’s side. Axar Patel cleaned Williamson in the 41st over to ensure India’s victory. Varun Chakravarthy completed his 5-fer as India won the game by 44 runs.

India vs New Zealand, Match 12th, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Captains’ Corner
“A slower wicket than what we have come up against. India controlled the middle phase. Shreyas batted well and Hardik finished off. Spun more than we thought, spun more than the other games here. Four quality spinners makes it tough. Key for us was wickets in the powerplay. Kane’s form nice for us. South Africa are a quality side. In those wickets with pace and bounce, they have good four pacers.”
Mitchell Santner(New Zealand Captain) said post-match
“Very important for us to finish on a high. New Zealand a good side, playing well in the recent past. Axar-Shreyas partnership was important after losing wickets in the first powerplay. They got us to good total, with our quality bowlers, we had the confidence to defend that. Varun has got something different, wanted to try and see what he had to offer. We got to think a little about what to do for the next game, good headache. If he gets it right, very difficult to read him. Momentum critical in such a short game. Try and win game, try and do everything right.
Rohit Sharma(India’s Captain) said post-match
