Sri Lanka cricket players during a match

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: After restricting India in the first ODI of the series to tie the match, Sri Lanka defeated India by 32 runs in the second ODI of the series to lead the series 1-0.

Sri Lanka’s captain, Charith Asalanka, after winning the toss, chose to bat first, but the decision backfired as Pathum Nissanka got out in the first delivery of the match; Mohammed Siraj found the edge with a good outswinger as Sri Lanka lost its first wicket on 0. Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis had a decent partnership for the second wicket. In the 17th over, Washington Sundar broke the partnership by dismissing Avishka Fernando on 40 runs. After the second wicket, Sri Lanka had some partnerships, but the Indian spinners didn’t let that turn any of them into a big one. With some contributions from Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage, Sri Lanka reached the score of 240 runs at the end of 50 overs.

Chasing 241, India’s start was decent, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scoring runs from both ends. The opening partnership was 97 runs as Rohit Sharma looked in a hurry and in some physical pain. He wanted to finish the game as early as possible, but while trying a reverse sweep in the 13th over, he got caught, and India lost their first wicket. Virat Kohli contributed 14 runs in the chase as India kept losing wickets against Sri Lanka’s spinners. Jeffrey Vandersay took the charge, and over after over, he was getting more lethal. He trapped India’s 6 players to reach his career-best figures of 6/33 in 10 overs. Sri Lanka won the match by 32 runs.

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: Captains’ Corner

I was pretty happy with the score we got on this track. I thought 240 was good enough. [On Vandersay causing selection headaches] Definitely, as a captain, these kind of problems I need to have. It was an unbelievable spell from him. When he came into bowl, they were scoring over 9. [On his role] I am still mainly a batsman and after that I bowl a few overs.”

Charith Asalanka(Sri Lanka Captain) said post-match

Credit to Jeffrey, bowled really well and picked six wickets. Sri Lanka played really good cricket. [On his dismissal] The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that there is bound to be risk taking and I’m not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero you feel disappointed if you don’t get across the line. But that won’t change my intent. We didn’t play good cricket, that’s why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That’s what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.
