India vs. Sri Lanka 3rd ODI: The Sri Lankan team made history after defeating India in a three-match ODI series by 2-0. This is the first time in 27 years that Sri Lanka has clinched an ODI series against India.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first, and the two openers gave the start needed to their team. Both openers scored runs and had an excellent first-wicket partnership. Pathum Nissanka was looking in good touch and tackled Axar Patel’s attack brilliantly in the initial overs, but when the partnership was at 89 runs, Axar Patel was the one to dismiss Nissanka. Avishka Fernando was still on the crease and scoring runs. He got the support of Kusal Mendis. Fernando scored his fifty and was reaching his hundred, but Riyan Parag picked up his wicket as the batter fell short of 4 runs. Kusal Mendis scored 59 runs, and contribution of 23 runs from Kamindu Mendis took Sri Lanka to 248 runs in 50 overs.
India’s start to the chase wasn’t good, though Rohit Sharma tried providing the flash start to the chase by scoring quick runs in the powerplay, but Shubman Gill got out after scoring 6 runs. While trying to get aggressive on the left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, Rohit Sharma got caught behind the stump. From there, the debacle of the Indian batting line-up started as, once again, the Sri Lankan spinner started taking wickets. No Indian batter could tackle the spin attack of Sri Lanka as they cleaned the Indian batting line-up in 26.1 overs, winning the match by 110 runs.

India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI: Captains’ Corner
I’m a happy captain right now, and I think the team did all the things well throughout the series. We all knew they are a very strong batting line-up and we just wanted to back our strength, which is spin bowling. Yes, the batters struggled a bit but if you want to win a series you need to do things like this [prepare tough pitches]. We are in a really good mood right now, especially our coach. He made a few changes in the team, and the boys really enjoyed the team environment.”
Charith Asalanka(Sri Lanka Captain) said post-match
We have to give credit where credit is due, Sri Lanka played better than us. We looked at the conditions, wanted to take pace off the ball, and that’s why we went with our combination. All in all we didn’t play good cricket through the series, and that is why we stand here. Throughout there were a few positives too. How the spinners bowled, some of the batters in the middle as well. We lost the series, and I feel there are a lot of areas we need to look at rather than the positives. We need to go back and look at what we need to do when we come up against conditions like this. Series lost doesn’t mean the end of the world. These guys have been playing very well over the past few years, very consistent, you will lose the odd series.”
