PBKS vs MI: The Mumbai Indians avoided another loss in the IPL 2024 by defeating the Punjab Kings at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur. Despite Ashutosh Sharma’s heroics, the Punjab Kings lost their fifth close match in the league. Mumbai Indians were favorites to win the game until the arrival of Ashutosh Sharma on the crease. The right-handed batter gave MI camp a scare with his fearless innings, in which he also scored his maiden IPL fifty. From four down to losing a match just by nine runs, a comeback but eventually a heartbreak for PBKS’s fans.
After winning the toss, Punjab Kings’ stand-in skipper Sam Curran invited the Mumbai Indians to bat first. MI’s start wasn’t ideal, as left-handed batter Ishan Kishan was dismissed with a score of 8. Suryakumar Yadav entered the crease, and that’s when the run-fest started as Mr. 360 started playing his game. Rohit Sharma was supporting the cause and hit some maximums, but he was cleaned by Harpreet Brar. Surya didn’t let the run rate down and kept dealing with boundaries and sixes. Tilak Varma was handy with the bat and scored 34 runs off 18 balls. Suryakumar Yadav scored his 23rd fifty in the IPL. Batters after Surya failed to capitalize, and the Mumbai Indians ended their innings with 192/7 on the board.
Chase begins from the Punjab Kings’ side with Sam Curran hitting the first boundary on the first ball of the innings, but the scenario changed in the next two overs as the Punjab Kings lost four wickets inside three overs of the powerplay. Shashank Singh, again playing his role as savior, slowly started closing the chase gap, but wickets kept falling from the other end. The duo of Ashutosh and Shashank again started doing their job of rescuing their team, but this time, Shashank Singh left Ashutosh as the former got out on the score of 41. Ashutosh Sharma refused to give up and started attacking the bowlers of MI. Unfortunately, he could only take his team’s score to 168-8 before getting out, and PBKS’ innings ended with 183 runs on the board. Losing the match by nine runs.

IPL 2024 33rd Match PBKS vs MI: Captains’ Corner
“Very good game of cricket. Everyone’s nerve got tested. We did speak about before the game that the character will be checked in this game. Naturally you think you’re ahead in the game. But we knew IPL has a tendency to produce these games. Unbelievable – coming in and playing like that (Ashutosh’s knock). Almost every ball hitting the middle. Happy for him and chuffed for his future. We did speak in the timeout that it doesn’t matter how good we look. We’ll keep scrapping in this game. We were quite soft in certain overs. Nevertheless, a win is a win,”
Hardik Pandya said post-match
“Another close one. This team (PBKS) loves close games. Did well to get close, thanks to Ashutosh (Sharma). Gutted, but a great effort to get that close,”
Sam Curran said post-match
