The rising tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack and India’s response via Operation Sindoor have left the ongoing Indian Premier League in a limbo, and taking the ongoing escalation on a serious note, the BCCI has decided to suspend the tournament. The security of the players is the priority of the BCCI, and considering that, IPL 2025 has been suspended for one week. Though this is the first time the IPL has been suspended, there were incidents before the current one that forced the officials to conduct the tournament somewhere or move it elsewhere, other than India.

IPL season 2(2009)- Moved to South Africa

Due to the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the IPL was shifted to South Africa. The government told the BCCI that it would be difficult to arrange security for the players as well amid the elections. That Year, the Deccan Chargers won the league.

IPL Season 7(2014)- Initial matches Held In UAE

The first 20 matches of season 7 were held in the UAE again for the same reason as in 2009: the general election. Post-election, the game resumed in India, with Kolkata Knight Riders lifting the trophy.

IPL season 13(2020)- IPL was entirely held in the UAE

The COVID-19 pandemic caused chaos around the world, and sports weren’t left untouched by it. Due to travel restrictions and strict guidelines, the tournament was shifted to the UAE and held between September and November, with the Mumbai Indians winning the finals.

IPL season 14(2021)- Later Half Held in UAE

Though the first wave of the COVID-19 virus was tackled by vaccination, the second wave, which started in mid-April 2021, affected many players. After 29 matches, the league resumed in September in the UAE.

IPL season 18(2025)- Suspended due to India-Pakistan Tensions

For the safety of players and officials, the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League is suspended for one week. It will be suspended indefinitely or resume in September if the situation doesn’t improve between the nations.
