Jersey Numbers worn by players in any sport have some significant meanings associated with them; some players choose their jersey number as per their birth date, and some remember a special date. There can be countless reasons behind getting a specific number for your team’s jersey and playing wearing that. Not just for the players, the jersey number becomes memorable for the fans as well with passing time if the player’s performance significantly impacts the team. In India, cricket is one of the most popular sports, and some players have had a lasting impact on the Indian cricket journey. So, to pay tribute to their legacy, the apex cricket organization of India, the BCCI, has retired those players’ jerseys.

What Is The Meaning Of Retiring A Jersey Number Of A Player?

When the BCCI decides to retire a particular Jersey number, it means that no other player in Indian cricket will wear that number in their career. So far, BCCI has retired two numbers(10 and 7). Number 10 was donned by the cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, and number 7 was of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. No other Indian cricketer will be seen wearing these numbers in any format of cricket for India.

The God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, was a cricketing idol for many young players currently representing India in international cricket. In fact, MS Dhoni also idolized Sachin Tendulkar in his youth. Virat Kohli is another name on the list who idolized Sachin Tendulkar. In his cricket career, he broke and made several records with the bat, and in 2017, to pay tribute to his legendary career, BCCI retired jersey number 10 from Indian cricket.
