Sri Lanka vs. New Zealand, 2nd ODI: Sri Lanka gained an unassailable lead of 2-0 after defeating New Zealand by 3 wickets in the second ODI.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka’s skipper, Charith Asalanka, decided to bowl first, and Sri Lanka’s spinners were quick to strike. Dunith Wellalage dismissed opener Tim Robinson in the 2nd over of the match as the Kiwis lost their first. Soon, Henry Nicholls got out. Will Young and Mark Chapman continued the innings, with the latter in good touch. The left-handed batter hit runs all over the park and scored 76 runs for his team before getting caught at deep mid-wicket. Mitchell hay contributed 49 runs as the batter missed his fifty by 1 run. Batters afterward failed to do anything significant. New Zealand’s innings ended with 209 runs on the board.
Chasing the target of 210 runs, Sri Lanka’s start wasn’t good as opener Avishka Fernando got out early in the powerplay after scoring 5 runs. Pathum Nissanka scored 28 runs before getting out. New Zealand spinners kept the pressure on as more batters got trapped; Sri Lanka was 65/4 in 15 overs. From there, Kusal Mendis kept his end and scored runs. Meanwhile, he partnered with Janith Liyanage, but his partnership with Maheesh Theekshana took Sri Lanka to victory over New Zealand with one over to spare.

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI: Captains’ Corner
As always, I am saying it is a journey. This is just another series. As a team, we are moving towards a big goal and we have to achieve that. This is a process. I misread the pitch a little. As we thought, dew came but the pitch was not (what we thought it would be like). (On Theekshana batting higher up) I hope so (laughs), Maheesh also liked that (innings). It is really tough for batters to score runs here. 2-3 batters, if they get set, their job is to finish the job. (On if they want to test their bench strength in the last ODI) I think we should try our bench (in the next game).

It is always a challenge when you are defending a low score. Kusal played the situation very well. we were trying to get the run-rate up but it never got over five. That partnership (between Kusal and Theekshana) at the end took it away, but we also left a few runs out there. Good performance with the ball to squeeze them and take wickets. We got a lot of spin in, was surprised it spun that much in the night. If we put up a few more runs out there and got to 240, it might have been a different story. It is a challenge coming over here and batting. Credit goes to them (for how they have bowled)
