Surya Kumar Yadav, or “Sky”, is an Indian right-handed batter who in recent times gained a lot of media attention due to his intriguing batting style, and people started calling him the next Mr. 360 in cricket, after AB De Villiers. Though some of his recent innings were not up to the level at which he plays, even in the IPL 2023, he hasn’t played the innings he is known for so far, but the potential he has to change the course of the game in just 1 over is a talent that very few cricketers have, So let’s explore some of his achievements and the struggles he went through to reach this level.

Childhood of Surya Kumar Yadav:

Surya Kumar Yadav was born on September 14, 1990, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. From the very young age of 10, he started playing cricket as his father (Ashok Yadav) saw his son’s interest in the game. Later on, he started training under his uncle Vinod Yadav and went to the Elf Vengsarkar Academy, where he groomed his cricket skills.

Domestic and International Cricket Career so far:

Surya Kumar Yadav had his list A debut in the year 2010 while playing for Mumbai in Ranji trophy and had his first class cricket debut against Delhi in the same year 2010. In the season 2011-12 of the Ranji trophy, Surya was the top scorer in runs from Mumbai’s team. Year on Year he started maturing his game and started playing some good knocks.

IPL:

Before getting selected for the Indian cricket team, he was purchased by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL season 2012, but he failed to impress and got dismissed without scoring. He played just one match in that year’s IPL. Later, he became part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2014, and in that year he played some vital innings that helped his team get into the finals. He was again purchased by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL season 2018, and since then he has been playing from the same franchise in the IPL till now, in 2023.

International Debut:

He made his international debut in the year 2021 when he became part of the Indian T20 team against England in the fourth game. On his debut, he hit the very first ball of his innings over the boundary for a six and went on to make his half-century.

Surya had his ODI debut in the same year against England and played some good innings. He became an integral part of the Indian team after playing some good knocks coming at number 3.

Later in 2022, it was a record-breaking year for him, as he played some of the most memorable innings for India and broke some records as well. But, the year 2023 didn’t start well for him as in the series against Australia, he failed to even open his scores and became the only Indian to have three golden ducks in three matches.

  • Surya Kumar Yadav is the second-fastest Indian cricketer to score a century in a Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka; Rohit Sharma is the fastest, scoring it in just 35 balls.
  • Surya is the fastest player in the world, having scored 1500 T20 international runs in terms of balls faced. He faced 843 balls to reach this milestone.
  • He ranks second in the most number of centuries by a player in T20 international matches; currently, he has made 3 centuries so far.
  • Surya also holds the record for the most sixes hit by a player in a T20 international in a calendar year.

Social and Personal life of Surya Kumar Yadav:

Surya Kumar Yadav loves posting pictures and connecting with the masses through his social networking pages; cricket fans also love following him, which is why he has nearly 7.6 million followers on his Instagram account. Surya married his longtime girlfriend Devisha Shetty in 2016. Surya has a younger sister named “Dinal Yadav”.

He is a tattoo lover and has many tattoos on his body; his upper body is full of tattoos, and during his younger days, he loved playing badminton as well. He is also popular due to his hot-headed nature, which has landed him in trouble several times. Due to his hot-headed nature, he was also removed from his captaincy when he was leading the Mumbai cricket team in the Ranji Trophy in the year 2014–15.

As a sportsperson, he takes good care of his diet and follows a strict fitness regime, and he also revealed that Sachin Tendulkar has been his cricket idol since childhood. He is a learning enthusiast and never stops learning new shots, even though he plays some of the most exciting cricket shots such as reverse sweeps, switch hits, etc. He tried to learn No-look six-shot pitching from South African batter Dewald Brevis.
