ENG(W) vs WI(W): West Indies women stormed into the semi-finals of the T20 Women World Cup 2024 after defeating England by 6 wickets in the last league stage match of the tournament.
West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss and decided to bowl first. England opened their innings with Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, and both batters tried to provide an explosive start to their team, but while trying to hit a shot at point, Danni Wyatt-Hodge got caught as England lost their first wicket. It didn’t take much time to get another wicket as sharp fielding at that point led to Alice Capsey’s run-out. Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Heather Knight stabilized the innings for a brief, but the skipper retired hurt after scoring 21 runs. After that, only Nat Sciver-Brunt kept on scoring runs from her end and scored her fifty. England finished with 141/7 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 142 runs, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews and her partner Qiana Joseph provided the start needed by their team. England’s sloppy fielding also helped the West Indies batters keep scoring runs. West Indies put 67 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay. Both batters had a partnership of 102 runs, as Qiana Joseph got out after scoring her fifty. Later, skipper Matthews got out after scoring her fifty. West Indies finished the match with 2 overs remaining.

I don’t think many people had us (as semi-finalists). Incredibly proud of the group. Up against the odds tonight but to put up a performance like that with the bat, Joseph scoring her first T20I fifty – what a time to do that. For the first six or so overs of our innings, it did slide on a bit (better). We have been chasing (before in this tournament) and we back ourselves to knock off whatever runs are put on the board. Important to take tomorrow off but to then get right back to it. We have not won the World Cup yet. It will be a big game against NZ and we are up for the challenge. Everyone knows their roles, what they want to do and on the day, we want to execute.

Frustrated. Bad timing for me and tough to watch. Credit to them, they came at us hard, played the conditions well and put us under the pump. Tough to take but credit to Hayley and her team. (On the score) I don’t think we were far off. There was a bit of turn in the surface, and was tough at times (to bat on). We bowled too short and they played it well. That partnership was top-quality and put us under the pump. Little tweak. I was strapped up, ready to come in and hit a few but yeah, frustrated. We will be judged on today. In a tournament like this, you slip up once and it can be costly. Very frustrated but very proud of the girls and they fight they have shown.
