SA(W) vs NZ(W): South Africa Women fell Short by 32 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against New Zealand women to finish as runner-ups for second consecutive time.
South Africa’s skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, won the toss and decided to bowl first. Georgia Plimmer and Suzie Bates opened the innings for New Zealand’s side. Both batters cleared their intentions from the first over as Plimmer started dealing in boundaries, but in the second over, while trying to hit the ball over long-on, she got caught, and New Zealand lost their first wicket. After that, Amelia Kerr and Suzie Bates built the partnership without changing their aggressive approach. Suzie Bates got out after scoring 32 runs, and then skipper Sophie Devine got out on just 6 runs. Amelia Kerr hit runs from her end and contributed 43 runs to the team’s total. Brooke Halliday hit 38 runs in the lower order to take the team’s total to 158/ 5 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 159 runs, South Africa’s start was explosive as skipper Laura Woolvardt and Tazmin Brits gave the start to the team by depositing 47 runs on the board at the end of the powerplay. But in the 7th Over, Tazmin Brits got out after scoring 17 runs for her team. Soon, the skipper also got out after getting caught in the covers. Semi-final hero Anneke Bosch couldn’t score more than 9 runs this time and was caught behind. No batter afterward could tackle the South African bowlers’ onslaught. New Zealand women stopped South Africa on 126 runs at the end of 20 overs, winning their first-ever final by 32 runs.

“Once I get my hands on that trophy, we will get away. I started to dream last night about what it feels to hold the trophy with this team, didn’t want to get to ahead of us. This group, Suze and Lea and for New Zealand cricket, it has been a long time. The great thing about this group is we know what we have been trying to achieve in the last 15, 18, 24 months. We kept taking steps in right directions, you want momentum and we came to the World Cup on the back of 10 successive losses. But everyone starts on zero. Speaks to the volume of who Suze is as a player. Most capped player in history of women’s game, to think she can go out and play with such aggression and fearlessness.“
Sophie Devine(New Zealand captain), said post-match
“Focus was just to reset [after semis], not get too ahead of ourselves. We knew that we still had a really quality opponent in New Zealand to go and yeah, just didn’t play our best cricket tonight. They really came out as hard in that powerplay. There was fear and intent early on from them. At first we thought we could score a few wickets here or there, but they just kept going. Yeah, probably let them score a few too many. It put a lot of pressure on us at the back. Lessons? I don’t know. I think we’ll have to have a good reflection on what exactly happened. We’re still a bit fresh right now. But yeah, half way stage, you know, I think we’re still backing ourselves to chase a little bit. It’s going to be a record-run chase, but you got off to an absolute flyer. [ on the start with the bat] definitely thought it was game on after that. But yeah, they really put the squeeze on after that. I think 7-11 was probably not our best phase. But credit to them, they were all pretty well in that phase.
