Australia vs Oman: Australia started their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a 39 runs victory over Oman. Marcus Stoinis was star of the match as the Aussie all-rounder not just contributed runs with the bat but also picked up three wickets in the match to secure a win for his team.

After winning the toss, Oman’s skipper Aqib Ilyas chose to bowl first and Australia started the first innings with David Warner and Travis Head on the crease. Both left-handers started decently, but Travis Head couldn’t take his innings beyond 12 runs and was caught at mid-off. Mitchell Marsh batted cautiously and scored 14 runs for his team before getting out. David Warner kept going from the other end and scored his fifty, but Marcus Stoinis scored valuable runs for his team and provided the required boost in the run rate. Stoinis remained not out and took the team’s score to 164 runs at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing the target of 165 runs, Oman’s opener Kashyap Prajapati started with a boundary, but Mitchell Starc made a comeback and picked up the wicket of Pratik Athavale in the first over. Oman’s skipper, Aqib Ilyas, scored some runs but couldn’t score more than 18 runs for his team as Marcus Stoinis sent him back to the pavilion. Ayaan Khan scored the highest number of runs for his side; the left-handed batter scored 36 runs for his team. Oman’s innings ended with 125 runs as they fell short of 40 runs to register a win.

Playing against a top side today was a great experience, especially following on from the Super Over last game. They played really well, but credit goes to our bowlers. Our bowlers can do really well on turning tracks and you could see one catch was messed up and then the over went for big runs. And then from there Stoinis performed. But credit to our boys, well done. [You said “don’t be overawed by this Australian side?] The thing with the media is that they don’t show the positive things we said about them, they only show the negatives. Obviously they’re top players, we respect them as cricketers like we respect everyone, but when we come out on to the field no one is bigger than you.

“Pretty close one in the end, but good to get a win first up. [Warner tempo] Everyone’s gotta play a little bit different this tournament I think. We might get few wickets that are [good for batting] but that’s the old T20 right? Someone batting through, and Davy delivered tonight. [Stoinis?] It was pretty special from him, took his time and then got going through the end of the innings. [Starc?] Yeah just a cramp, we just took him off as a precaution but he says he’s fine. [Cob webs?] Not sure if was cob webs as much as different conditions. Things may look a little different on these sort of wickets, but I think that’s exciting. We go on to England now and hopefully that’ll be a good game with a good crowd.”
