West Indies vs Uganda: In the 18th match of the T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies registered a huge victory against the underdogs Uganda to secure two more points in the tournament. With two victories, they are second from the top in their group.

West Indies skipper Rovman Powell chose to bat first after winning the toss, and the WI’s openers, Johnson Charles and Brandon King started well, posting 41 runs inside four overs. Uganda got the first breakthrough in the fifth over as Brandon King was sent back to the dugout by Alpesh Ramjani. Nicholas Pooran hit some big sixes to announce his presence on the crease but could only score 22 runs. Skipper Rovman Powell scored 23 runs and batted cautiously with Charles. Both batters took the score of their team to 105. Some powerful hitting from the middle overs batters took the score to 173/5 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing the target of 174, Uganda’s start wasn’t good as they lost their opener, Roger Mukasa, in the second ball of the first over, and the next over, Simon Ssesazi got dismissed after scoring a boundary. West Indies bowlers afterward didn’t let any Uganda batter score more than 10 as Uganda’s line-up was shattered by Akeal Hosein, who took a fifer in this match. Uganda was bowled out for just 39 runs by the co-host to register a victory by 134 runs.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 18: West Indies vs Uganda| Captains’ Corner

We talk about improving 10-15% every match. Last game, we were flat so we just wanted to improve as a team. When you are playing at home, the pressure can sometimes get to you. So, a little bit of rust (in the first match). We started off at 60%, now up to 70-80% and from here, it gets tougher. He (Akeal Hosein) has been fantastic, that is why he is the No.3 ranked bowler in the world. He has done it against Full-Member nations as well, and we expect him to do it against teams that are just coming into international cricket. (On the challenges ahead) It is just for us to continue to play good cricket. We have played good cricket for the last 12 months or so. It gets tougher from here but we understand conditions and cricket is not easy in the Caribbean. Since West Indies have come to Guyana, the support has been fantastic

Tough day for us. It is a very steep learning curve. Just shows the difference in class. We were outplayed (in all departments) but we must take the learnings from it: as a batting unit, what we can do better to keep us in the game. There were some positives in that bowling performance. To keep them under 200 stood out. The way we bowled at the death, that was very impressive from the two young men (Kyewuta and Miyagi). Hopefully we can build on that. (Experience so far at the T20 WC) It is a huge challenge, but something we are enjoying. We understand that to get better, we need to play oppositions like these and over time, we can hopefully reduce the gap.
