West Indies vs New Zealand: West Indies has qualified for the Super-8 with their victory over New Zealand in the match 26 of the T20 World Cup 2024.

At Brian Lara Cricket Stadium, New Zealand won the toss and invited West Indies to bat first. West Indies didn’t get the start they were looking for, as Johnson Charles got out on a duck in the first over. Nicholas Pooran hit a few shots to announce his presence, but Southee soon dismissed him; even the skipper Rovman Powell got out with a score of 1. The top-order of the West Indies collapsed, but Sherfane Rutherford put up the fight and started increasing the run rate; few others chipped in as West Indies posted a decent total of 149/9 on the board. Sherfane Rutherford remained not out and scored his fifty.

Chasing 150, New Zealand’s start wasn’t good as opener Devon Conway got dismissed in the third over of the innings. New Zealand’s batting line-up was feeling the pressure, and WI’s spin bowlers kept pushing the batters to make mistakes; wickets kept falling from New Zealand’s side, and skipper Kane Williamson also got trapped by spinner Gudakesh Motie. Glenn Phillips was alone fighting from New Zealand’s chase but couldn’t go beyond 40 runs. New Zealand fell short of 13 runs as West Indies won their third consecutive match to qualify for super-8.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 26: West Indies vs New Zealand| Captains’ Corner

Very happy (with the performance). From the outside, we told our guys someone will have to play a blinder (because of how the pitch could be due to inclement weather) We always believe individual brilliance is needed. That (Rutherford) innings gave us confidence and belief. We watched what they did well and tried to replicate it. Hard length was difficult (to get away). We sat down as a bowling length and decided to hit a hard length, with the spinners trying to spin the ball. (On bowling the spinners early) You have to use what you have. We don’t have as many fast bowlers as NZ. We have three spinners, so have to push them as much as I can. (On the crowd support) It was fantastic.

It was good. We had an inkling that it was going to be tricky if you hit an area, and that proved to be the case. On these surfaces, you have to find a way and an over or two can be the difference. The quality of Sherfane’s innings was high. The batting depth in their side was beneficial for sure. We knew there were going to be some tough overs there. We tried to take the aggressive option to take wickets. (On Santner’s ability to bowl to left-handers) We know that and we have full trust in that. We saw how tricky it was when you hit the wicket and we were certainly trying to execute as well as we could.
