Oman vs England: England got a massive boost in their net run rate after they defeated Oman in the 28th match of the T20 World Cup in 2024. England won the match by 8 wickets to remain alive in the Super-8 hunt.
England, after winning the toss, decided to bowl first, and Oman’s openers Pratik Athavale and Kashyap Prajapati started the innings for Oman. England’s bowlers were quick to their task and dismissed the first batter in the second over of the match. England’s bowlers inside powerplay sent four batters to the dugout, and no top-order batter scored more than 10 runs. After the pacers, the Spinners showed their magic and shattered Oman’s hope of scoring big runs. In fact, they couldn’t let the whole team go beyond 50 runs. Oman was bowled out for 47 in the 13.2 overs.
Chasing just 48 runs, England’s openers looked in a hurry to finish the match to improve their Net run rate. Phil Salt hit two consecutive sixes in the first two deliveries of the chase, but Oman’s bowler Bilal Khan made the comeback to dismiss him in the next ball. In the next over, Will Jacks got dismissed for 5, but that didn’t stop England batters from attacking Oman as skipper Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow chased the target in 3.1 overs.

“Nothing much to say, it was a big collapse. It was big exposure, but still there are positives. With associate teams, we don’t get to play bowlers who bowl at 140kph [often]. At the back of the mind, expecting a lot of pace, it is difficult. Some areas, the ball was there to hit, but they had fielders up in the ring. Batters didn’t look uncomfortable but bad shot selection [cost us]. Hats off to them for putting pressure on the bowlers. They had to go for run rate. We have learned a lot, how we can get better. We competed in some areas. You learn where you stand, but we have to work hard.”

Thought the tone was set by the bowlers, take early wicket and restrict them. Job done today, another game in two days’ time. Bowled brilliantly, there was extra bounce. Topley with his height… I thought they bowled a good line and length. [Spin] Don’t think anyone expected the wicket to play like it did, looked a really good surface. [Batting] Just looked to be positive, try to take advantage of the NRR. [Criticism] Been around long enough to know that people make comments. We know what’s going on in the dressing room. We have another huge match to come. We can only control what we do, all focus is on that.”
