Sri Lanka vs Netherlands: Sri Lanka got their first league stage win in the T20 World Cup 2024 against the Netherlands as the former defeated the latter by 83 runs to win the match.
After winning the toss, the Netherlands chose to bowl first, and Sri Lanka’s start wasn’t good as opener Pathum Nisanka got out in the first over on a duck, and soon Kamindu Mendis got dismissed on the score of 17 runs. Sri Lanka lost two early wickets, but Kusal Mendis and De Silva built the partnership and scored quick runs, whereas the former scored 46 runs. Asalanka and Angelo Mathews, in the lower order, played a great innings and put pressure on the Dutch bowlers. The latter hit 30 runs, and the skipper’s 20 runs contribution helped Sri Lanka put 201 on the board at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing a total of 202 runs, the Netherlands’ openers gave the start needed to their team. Both openers were dealing in boundaries and sixes, but in the fifth over, Max O Dowd got caught at deep square leg while trying to hit another maximum. In the next over, Michael Levitt, who was looking good with the bat, got stumped after scoring 31 runs. The Netherlands lost back-to-back wickets, and Sri Lanka didn’t let the pressure off the opponent and kept taking wickets. Scott Edwards held his ground for some time, but the required run rate was skying high; soon, the Netherlands innings got over as they were bowled out for 114 runs in 16.4 overs.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 38: Sri Lanka vs Netherlands| Captains’ Corner
After the bad first two games this win is very healthy for us. The wicket was really good we just wanted to put a 160-170 score on this wicket. With our attack anything over 160 we can defend. In the first two games we lost two or three wickets in the first six overs. Today we didn’t. I think that was the difference. Asalanka has a lot of talent and he proved today what he could do. Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva also played a role.”
Wanindu Hasaranga(Sri Lanka Captain) said post-match
The wickets were better than we have been playing on, and the margins of error were a bit smaller, and we missed a little bit. With there being a shorter side and the wind going that way – we were slow to react to that. We have to be better at that.
