Nepal lost a cliffhanger against South Africa by just one run.

Nepal vs South Africa: South Africa held their nerves to win a thriller against Nepal. In match number 31 of the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa defeated Nepal by just one run to win a low-scoring match. Nepal gave the scares to South Africa but the latter were too god to defeat.

After winning the toss, Nepal’s skipper Rohit Paudel decided to bowl first. Nepal’s bowlers read the Caribbean conditions well and started bowling accordingly; all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee was the first to get a breakthrough by taking the wicket of Quinton de Kock. Skipper Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks started building a partnership and took the score to 68, but Kushal Bhurtel sent him back to the dugout in the 12th over of the match. Soon, Reeza Hendricks got out on 43, and the projected score dropped after losing back-to-back wickets. Due to Tristan Stubbs’s 27 runs innings, South Africa managed to score 115/7 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing the target of 116 in 20 overs, Nepal got a decent start with both openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh scoring runs from both ends as Nepal put 35 runs on the board at the end of 7 overs. South Africa’s spinner Tabraiz Shamsi picked up the first wicket for his team as Kushal Bhurtel, while trying a reverse sweep, got bowled. Skipper Rohit Paudel followed the former and got bowled on a duck by Shamsi in the same over. Aasif Sheikh and Anil Sah batted cautiously and took Nepal closer to its victory, but in the 14th over, Anil Sah got out, and South Africa was back in the game. Shamsi picked up the wicket of Aasif Sheikh, and it was the moment of the match where he almost snatched the victory from Nepal’s side in the last over. When Nepal needed 2 runs in the last ball, Gulsan Jha got run out, and Nepal lost—the match by one run.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 31: Nepal vs South Africa| Captains’ Corner

“Very grateful to have got the win, we were not near our best tonight. Reflecting back on the game over the next few days, there will be a lot of learnings for us. We have a good pace attack and you want to back that. I thought if we got the ball in the right areas, it would be challenging for the batters. In hindsight, we should have picked another spinner. First and foremost, the way [Nepal] bowled it made it really tough for us. They put us under a lot of pressure. And maybe there was not enough conviction in our plans. [On moving from USA to West Indies] It has been a bit different, we spent the whole day almost doing nothing and there we’d be playing first thing in the morning. Moving forward some things may change. It’s one of the big challenges of cricket, being open minded and adapting.”

Aiden Markram(South Africa Captain) said post-match

“I think I am very proud of the unit, especially the way we bowled and batted. When we saw the wicket yesterday, we thought it would be on the slower side. When we were bowling I thought the wicket was helping the spinners so we carried on with the spinners. I think we were very close but a little far. In crunch moments we did well, I thought we fought very good. If we get more exposure to games like this, we will be on the other side [of the result]. [On the fans] I want to thank the fans for the way they have been supporting us. They come a long way, in the rain and everything, they come to support us.”
