South Africa avoided defeat in a close contest with the USA in the first match of the Super-8 stage.

USA vs South Africa: South Africa started their Super-8 of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a win over co-host USA. “The Proteas” defeated the USA by 18 runs.

South Africa’s start wasn’t great as the proteas lost Reeza Hendricks early in the over from their skipper Aiden Markram, and wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock batted cautiously and took risks whenever it was needed. Both batters built the partnership required and kept running the scoreboard. Both batters did a partnership of 100+ runs, and Quinton de Kock contributed 74 runs before getting out in the 13th over. Harmeet Singh picked up David Miller’s wicket in the next delivery, and the USA made a comeback. Aiden Makram got dismissed with a score of 46 and couldn’t score his fifty. South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs scored crucial runs in the death overs, taking the team’s total to 194/4 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 195 USA’s start was decent as the left-hand, right-hand combination of Steven Taylor and Andries Gous worked for them. Both batters took the benefit of the field restrictions and hit 33 runs in 3 overs, but in the fourth, Steven Taylor got out after scoring 24 runs. While hitting a pick-up shot in the last over of the powerplay, Nitish Kumar got caught at Deep-Square leg. USA was 53-2, Keshav Maharaj dismissed skipper Aaron Jones in the next over, and USA lost back-to-back wickets after that, but the hopes of USA were kept alive by the opener Gous and Harmeet Singh. Both batters started attacking South Africa’s bowlers and closed the chase gap. Kagiso Rabada held his nerve in the penultimate over and leaked just two runs. In the final over, even after giving a tough fight, the USA lost the match by 18 runs.

T20 World Cup 2024 Super-8: USA vs South Africa| Captains’ Corner

“A couple of overs here and there we need to tidy up. I think you always feel you need more runs. But the wicket definitely changes and gets a bit slower, and they were a lot less sloppy. A couple of lessons to take, but nice for the batters to be in the middle and get some runs, especially for Quinny to really get his flow.”

Aiden Markram(South Africa Captain) said post-match

“Hard to take a defeat after coming so close. But we did lack discipline in the bowling at times. Once we play good cricket we can beat any team in the world. But we need to be a lot more disciplined.”

Aaron Jones(USA Captain) said post-match
