West Indies vs Papua New Guinea: West Indies nearly escaped the biggest upset of the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Papua New Guinea in the second match of the marquee tournament. Defending a mere total of 136 runs, Papua New Guinea gave the toughest opening fight to the two-time T20 World Champions and took the match to the penultimate over. West Indies won the match by 5 wickets.
West Indies skipper Rovman Powell, after winning the toss, decided to bowl first. PNG’s opener Tony Ura got dismissed early, followed by Lega Siaka and then skipper Assad Vala. PNG was three down inside the powerplay. But left-handed batter Ses Baue gave the fight to the WI’s bowlers and scored a fifty for his team before getting out. In the lower order, Kiplin Dooriga contributed some runs to take his team’s total to 136/8 at the end of 20 overs.
West Indies’ start to chase down the total of 137 runs wasn’t good as Johnson Charles got out on a duck. But Nicholas Pooran and Brandon King smashed some great hits to take WI to a good score at the end of the powerplay. After the field restrictions were ended, PNG’s spinners made WI’s batters struggle for runs, and constant pressure from the PNG’s bowler crumbled WI’s batting line-up and they kept losing wickets. Roston Chase held his ground and started closing the chase gap as WI’s won the match with one over to spare by 5 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 2: West Indies vs Papua New Guinea| Captains’ Corner
Credit has to be given to PNG. I think there plans were simple and they played good cricket. I think (PNG’s score of 136 for 8) it’s a little, 10 or 15, too much. And as a bowling group that’s something we need to work on. They played smartly. On Roston Chase’ performance: “That was very good. Started from a bowling effort, I think he bowled pretty well. And coming at the end, when we were under pressure coming there with composure, and to come out with a winning innings was great for us. I think we can be better in all three departments.”
Rovman Powell(WI Captain) said post-match
It was a competitive score but we believe we missed a trick towards the end. Another 10 to 15 runs would have been nice. We’re really happy with the way we fought. We got wickets in key moments, but we couldn’t nail it at the end. I’m really pleased with the effort from the boys. It’s an opporunity and a challenge we look forward to. We try and play our best cricket against the best players. It was an opportunity to go out there and play the way we wanted to play.”
