Viacom 18 win BCCI’s media rights for the next four and a half years

BCCI’s media rights, both digital and TV rights, have been purchased by Viacom 18 for a period of nearly 4 and a half years, from September 2023 to March 2028. Outbidding Disney Star and Sony, Viacom 18, which is currently broadcasting live cricket matches on its digital platform Jio Cinema, has purchased the media rights for Rs 5,963 crore, which averages to Rs 67.8 crore per game. There are 88 bilateral matches that will feature India in the next 5 years, and it could go up to 102 matches. The amount given by Viacom 18 for the media rights of the BCCI is nearly 13% higher than what was paid by Star India in the previous bid.

Mukesh Ambani-owned Viacom 18 already has the IPL broadcasting rights for the 2023–2027 cycle, and now that they have purchased the BCCI media rights, both TV and digital, it is expected that on Jio Cinema cricket fans can watch India matches for free, but only time will tell. As of now, Viacom 18 has the rights for both TV and digital rights of the WPL, digital rights for the IPL, and now digital plus TV of India’s matches. This Thursday, during an e-auction organized by BCCI, three contenders, Viacom 18, Disney Star, and Sony Pictures Network India, participated.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the development by congratulating Viacom 18 on official X account.

“Congratulations @viacom18 for winning the @BCCI Media Rights for both linear and digital for the next 5 years. India Cricket will continue to grow in both spaces as after @IPL, and @wplt20, we extend the partnership @BCCI Media Rights as well. Together we will continue to capture the imagination of cricket fans

Jay Shah posted

India, after the Asia Cup, will be seen in an ODI series against Australia before the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup.
