Lewis Hamilton, his father, and Red Bull: What really happened?
As you may have heard, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner claimed that a representative of Lewis Hamilton’s contacted him earlier this year to inquire about possibly joining Red Bull in 2024. This was surprising, considering that Hamilton has been loyal to Mercedes since 2013 and has won six of his eight world titles.
However, Hamilton denied this claim and said that Horner initiated the communication. He also said he was happy with Mercedes and did not intend to leave. So, who is telling the truth? Well, according to a BBC report, the representative who contacted Horner was none other than Hamilton’s father, Anthony. Anthony Hamilton was his son’s manager until 2010, when they decided to part ways professionally. However, he remains involved in his son’s career and supports him at the races.
But why would Anthony Hamilton contact Horner if his son was not interested in moving to Red Bull? There are several possible explanations. One is that he was curious about the situation at Red Bull and wanted to know more about their plans and prospects for the future. Another is that he was trying to create some leverage for his son in the negotiations with Mercedes, who had not yet offered him a new contract. A third is that he was genuinely concerned about his son’s chances of winning more titles with Mercedes, who have struggled to keep up with Red Bull in the past three seasons.
Whatever the reason, it seems that Anthony Hamilton’s contact with Horner did not impact Lewis Hamilton’s decision. He signed a new two-year deal with Mercedes in August, committing himself to the team until 2026. He said he felt at home at Mercedes and trusted them to deliver a competitive car for the following seasons.
However, that may not be an easy task. Red Bull has dominated Formula 1 since 2022, winning three consecutive constructors’ and drivers’ championships with Max Verstappen. Verstappen has been Hamilton’s main rival for the past few years and has proven to be faster, more consistent, and more aggressive than him on track.
Hamilton has not given up on his dream of winning a record-breaking ninth world title, but he knows he faces a huge challenge. He has warned that Mercedes needs to have the best six months of development ever seen in Formula 1 history to catch up with Red Bull and overthrow them in 2024.
Abu Dhabi qualifying will start on November 25th, 2023, and the race is on the 26th, which will be an important race for the Mercedes because they are right now in the 2nd place in the constructor standing, but Ferrari is just behind them. Hamilton is in 3rd place, just behind Sergio Parez.
But will that be enough? And will Hamilton cope with the pressure of fighting against a younger and hungrier opponent? These questions will define the next chapter of his legendary career.
