Faruk Koca, president of Ankaragucu, has tendered his resignation following an incident where he punched referee Halil Umut Meler at the end of a Super Lig match on Monday night. The shocking act led to the indefinite suspension of matches in all Turkish football leagues by the country’s football association. On Tuesday, a Turkish court ordered Koca’s arrest and remanded two other suspects in custody over the violence.
Koca’s resignation came after he physically assaulted referee Meler during the top-flight game against Rizespor, prompting widespread condemnation. The Turkish court formally arrested Koca and two others for “injuring a public official” after statements were taken from them by prosecutors.
In a letter confirming his resignation, Koca expressed remorse, apologizing to the Turkish referee community, sports public, and the nation. He acknowledged the unacceptable nature of his actions, emphasizing that no injustice could justify the violence he committed. Koca, who had taken constructive initiatives during his tenure as Ankaragucu president, expressed embarrassment for creating an environment contrary to his efforts.
The resignation aims to prevent further harm to the Ankaragucu club, its fans, the community, and Koca’s family. He hoped that the incident would serve as a catalyst for purifying the sports life, especially the football community, from mistakes, shortcomings, and the culture of violence.
Koca emphasized that sports fields should be venues for gentlemanly competition, and any behavior casting a shadow on fair play, including his own, has no place in stadiums or halls. The incident has ignited discussions about the need for a cultural shift within sports, focusing on fostering a respectful and fair environment.
As Turkish football leagues remain suspended indefinitely, the aftermath of Koca’s resignation prompts reflection on the broader implications of violence within the sporting community.
