Kolkata, often referred to as the cultural capital of India, witnessed a unique blend of sports and tradition as Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho Gaucho graced the city during its grand Durga Puja celebrations. The former Barcelona and AC Milan star’s visit added an extra layer of excitement to the already vibrant festivities.
Traditionally, the Durga Puja festival in Kolkata begins on the sixth day following Mahalaya, but this year, it started with a bang on the second day with Ronaldinho inaugurating a series of pandals (elaborate temporary structures that house idols of Goddess Durga).
Ronaldinho, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner, arrived to an enthusiastic welcome at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Fans had gathered in large numbers, eager to catch a glimpse of the legendary footballer.
One of the highlights of Ronaldinho’s visit was his visit to the Sreebhumi Durga Puja Pandal, where he offered prayers and inaugurated the pandal. His presence brought immense excitement and joy to the pandal’s organizers and devotees alike.
In addition to his participation in the religious ceremonies, Ronaldinho also indulged in his love for football. He played a friendly football match at the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Kolkata, where he shared the field with local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sujit Bose. The footballer interacted with young players and trainees, inspiring them with his presence.
During his visit, Ronaldinho had the honor of meeting Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal’s Chief Minister, and presented her with a special jersey. His trip wasn’t just about football and festivities; it also included charitable activities. Ronaldinho expressed his excitement about the trip on Facebook and detailed his plans, including visiting his R10 Football academy, engaging with kids, participating in charity football matches, and promoting the beautiful game.
Ronaldinho’s visit to Kolkata created a unique fusion of sports and culture, adding an unforgettable chapter to the city’s Durga Puja celebrations and leaving fans with cherished memories of the football legend’s presence.
