Chelsea’s January Transfer Window Plans: Striker Targets, Loan Assessments, and Potential Departures

Chelsea considers January transfers including Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen, with potential departures and recalls on the table.

As the January transfer window approaches, Chelsea is quietly preparing for potential player movements at Stamford Bridge. While it’s not expected to be a blockbuster window for the club, there are intriguing possibilities on the horizon.

The top priority for Chelsea during the transfer window is securing a quality center-forward. However, the club won’t rush into this decision and may wait until the summer if the right candidate isn’t available in January.

One name on Chelsea’s radar is Ivan Toney. The Brentford striker, set to return from an eight-month ban in the new year, is eager to find a new club. Chelsea and Arsenal have shown keen interest in the 27-year-old.

Another high-profile target for Chelsea is Victor Osimhen, one of the most sought-after strikers in the world. Despite an impressive 2022/23 season with Napoli, the Italian club was reluctant to let him go in the summer and may maintain a similar stance in January.

Nicolas Jackson, a rising talent at Chelsea, remains highly rated. However, Chelsea believes that adding another striker for competition will benefit Jackson in the long run and prevent over-reliance on the 22-year-old.

While there won’t be an extensive list of departures, Chelsea will assess the situations of players who are out of favor and consider loaning them out in January.

One potential loan candidate is Lesley Ugochukwu, who has made a couple of Premier League starts this season but could face increased competition with Romeo Lavia’s return.

Deivid Washington, a teenage talent signed from Santos, has seen minimal playing time at Chelsea and may be loaned out to gain experience.

Andrey Santos, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, could be recalled in January and either integrated into the first-team squad or sent to a more suitable temporary club.

Meanwhile, Ian Maatsen, who had multiple suitors over the summer, may leave Chelsea either on loan or in a permanent deal. Burnley remains interested in the Netherlands international, with a potential offer in January.

Lastly, Trevoh Chalobah, who faced an injury setback in pre-season, may be sold by Chelsea after a collapsed move to Bayern Munich. The 24-year-old defender is yet to make a competitive appearance under Mauricio Pochettino.
